Buying a Car for Your Teen Driver: Part Two | Luther Nissan

Welcome back for part two of our tips for buying a car for your teen! If you haven’t already read part one of our list, you can check it out here.

Last week, we mentioned that safety should be your top priority when choosing your child’s first car. This week, we’re going to give you a few key safety features that will certainly help to put your mind at ease while your teen is behind the wheel.

Side Curtain Airbags

These airbags are an excellent complement to standard airbags and give a more full protection in the event of a crash. They help to cushion and protect passengers and also help to keep them inside of the car during an accident, rather than being thrown out of it.

Bluetooth Connectivity

Bluetooth connectivity for phones and iPods is incredibly helpful to keep your child focused on the road. Easy connection between the cell phone and the car means less distraction when answering a call (only from you, of course) or changing the song. Many cars equipped with Bluetooth also allow you to speak commands, so you can call mom or play your favorite album all without ever taking your hands off the wheel.

Front Crash Prevention Technology

This feature is fairly new and is an optional feature on the majority of cars for which it is available. Although it is an add-on feature (on some models), it is definitely something to consider. This technology monitors the distance and velocity of the vehicle in front of you – and the one in front of it! – to keep more eyes on the road than you ever thought possible. Some features of this kind only alert you to sudden stops ahead with a noise and light, but many include emergency autonomous braking. So if the car lets you know you need to stop suddenly to avoid hitting the car in front of you and you don’t react fast enough, it will hit the brakes for you.

Three of Nissan’s 2016 models (Altima, Maxima & Murano) were awarded the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating, meaning that in addition to being some of the safest cars and SUVs on the road (the Top Safety Pick rating), when equipped with front crash prevention technology, vehicles earned an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention.

The 2016 Nissan Rogue and Sentra were awarded Top Safety Pick awards this year, giving shoppers a lot of great Nissan options when choosing a safe car!

When shopping for your teen’s first car, don’t be afraid of being “that parent” who is overprotective or too careful – that’s a good thing! Talk with your child about what is expected and the budget you have made. Then be sure to shop around together, letting him or her get a good feel for the cars you are willing to buy. Whether it’s pre-owned or new, they will appreciate being part of the process!

For a great selection of pre-owned and new vehicles, visit us at Luther Nissan Kia in Inver Grove Heights, MN!
